Default Boil Water Advisory

A New Day eDevotional

Boil Water Advisory

Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

I am very grateful for the convenience of “city water.” A municipal water system is far superior to the days of sulfur laden water from a well that left clothes, bath tubs and sinks stained and hampered efforts to have an abundant supply of fresh drinking water. From time to time, especially during inclement weather, freeze and thaw cycles, or unforeseen accidents result in water line damage. After the repair has been made in the main municipal water line, a “boil water advisory” is issued—due to potential bacterial contamination. Until routine monitoring of the water supply verifies the water is safe to drink, residents are advised to boil their water prior to consuming, so any harmful organisms can be destroyed. The water may appear to be “normal” on the surface. Yet, to the unseen eye, harmful organisms may be resident—which could result in serious illness if ingested. Just as our bodies can become ill from ingesting harmful bacteria, our spirits can also become ill from ingesting spiritual contaminants. Notice our Scripture lesson today. The Apostle Paul advises us to take great care in what we consume in our spirit man. He characterizes the ideal things to ingest as: “true,” “honest,” “just,” “pure,” “lovely,” and “of a good report.” We must not allow, to invade our spirits, elements of bitterness, negativity, unforgiveness, or impurity. These will certainly bring sickness to our inner man, just as harmful bacteria can bring corruption to our physical man. Harmful bacteria are killed when the water temperature is raised to 212ºF.

Likewise, an environment of positive thoughts and faith-filled confession will “turn the heat up” on negativity and eradicate any vestiges of contamination to the Believer’s spirit. In doing so, an unending supply of fresh water can be available to more than satisfy the deepest thirst for this and each new day.
