Default Have you ever experienced a burnout?

YOUR DAILY INSPIRATION

Have you ever experienced a burnout? When you are just so exhausted and tired of everything, you seem to be stuck somehow and can’t keep moving again. No motivation, no energy, just blah. For most of us this happens through work, maybe even family. But what do you do when you experience a spiritual burnout?

When it comes to my walk with God I seem to be on a rollercoaster ride, it goes up and down, up and down. For weeks or even months at a time I will be on fire for God, spend hours every day with my nose in my bible, pray all throughout my day, worship Him not just in church, but also at home and things just seem to be going great.

And then I hit a wall. I feel exhausted, I’m tired, I am fatigued and my walk with God slows way down. I am not in the mood to pick up my bible, even though I know I should. I do the shortest prayers possible because I don’t want to spend any time on it. My mind and my flesh keep telling me that having a serious walk with God requires too much of my time.

And then of course the guilt kicks in every time I walk right past my bible without picking it up, when I know I should. But the exhaustions wins, my flesh wins. Yet the answer to my problem is in the bible.

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint or grow weary, there is no searching of His understanding. He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and making it to abound]. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and [selected] young men shall feebly stumble and fall exhausted; But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired.” Isaiah 40:28-31.

The cure to these burnouts is to spend quiet time with God. Reading in the bible, spending time in prayer and worship with Him, does more to restore our bodies, minds, and emotions, than anything else we could do. You may have noticed this before when you get tired as the week drags on and you are ready for Sunday so you can go to church, get plugged in and recharge your batteries.

But you don’t have to wait until church. God is right here with you every day. Talk to Him, spend time with Him, put on some worship music and dance, and He will restore you and strengthen you, in body, mind, and soul.

And keep in mind that the enemy will keep you from spending time with God any which way he can. If you are too tired to read your bible, maybe it is time to do something about your busy schedule and open up more time for God so that the joy of the Lord may be your strength again.

Lord, I pray that when I am weary and fatigued, your joy will be my strength again. I thank you for renewing my body, mind and soul and for lifting up my spirit, so that I may soar like an eagle. Amen.

Between the years of 3-10 years of recovery, I opened and closed 7 meeting in 6 days for 7 years. I experienced burn out every year. In September, I would go to the AA Autumn Leaf Roundup. I got myself topped up and over flowing. The convention was my filling up station for those 7 years and for many years afterward. When you have an empty feeling, fill it up with spiritual things.

Jo, You reminded me of something my sponsor told me in the beginning of her being my sponsor. She said, "Tammy, there is a little two letter word that you need to learn and that is no. It is ok to say no when someone asks you to do something. You can't be everything to everyone do you will suffer burnout. You need to make sure you take time for yourself to renew, restore and refresh yourself. If you don't take care of yourself first then you will be no good to anyone else."
