Beautiful reality Look back for just a moment with nothing but pure gratitude in your heart. Gather for yourself a deep and powerful sense of appreciation that you can carry forward. The joys, the disappointments, the exciting times, the tedious efforts, all have given you great strength. Now, feel that strength and put it to positive use. Fulfill the promise that has been building in you since long before you knew it was there. Fully appreciate where you’ve been, and carry that appreciation to the very best places you can go. This is a day when you’re prompted to look to the future. Look now with confidence and the highest expectations. Life deserves the most purposeful, focused, effective version of yourself you can give it. You deserve the most fulfilling life you can imagine and create. So activate all that potential you’ve earned at such a great cost, for this is your year, this is your time. This is when you create the beautiful reality that your life has made possible. — Ralph Marston

Strong in your choices Do not give your priceless moments away for nothing. Focus your attention, your resources, your energy where they will lift up life and create real benefit. Choose the goals that challenge you, do the work that’s difficult. Seek goodness and meaning over comfort and expedience. What comes easily disappears quickly. What you obtain with no sacrifice or no effort cannot possibly provide any lasting value. Align yourself with truth, with what’s good, with what’s right, even if it’s not popular or convenient. Truth eventually makes itself unavoidable, and when that happens you definitely want to already be on its side. Every choice you make will either add to the quality and integrity of your life, or detract from it. That is a serious hazard, and an enormous opportunity. Today, tomorrow, every time, choose what you know is right, what you know is best. Be strong in your choices, and bring new and valuable rewards to all of life. — Ralph Marston

Making time into achievement Intention transforms empty time into a fulfilling life. Supply yourself with intention, and you’ll provide your world with achievement. You are highly capable, yet mere capability doesn’t put food on the table. Intention activates your capability, with results that seem miraculous. Know with clarity what you are choosing to do. Harness all your energy, focus it, apply it, with intention. Shield yourself from meaningless distractions, with intention. Put your time, your attention, your skills to worthwhile use, with intention. Set an ambitious intention, and discover how very much you can accomplish. Live the day with intention, and give yourself cause to be thankful for the way you’ve made use of your time. Live with the power of intention. Decide what you’re going to do, and let that intention continue transforming time into achievement. — Ralph Marston

Step forth You are the link between possibility and reality. You can envision and you can achieve. The possibilities are truly infinite in number, with more arriving all the time. Yet their value depends entirely on what you do with them. Those possibilities rely on you to give them manifestation. Those possibilities depend on you to give them meaning. Let yourself be amazed and inspired that so many things are possible. But don’t be so caught up in your amazement that you neglect to do anything with any of the possibilities. Every day, it’s up to you to decide, determine, and understand what life means to you. Every day, you draw from a universe of possibilities to give that meaning form, substance, and expression. That makes today one momentous day, and here you are to live it. Remind yourself of all that matters, of all that can be, and step forth. — Ralph Marston

Address the cause The most powerful way to solve a problem is not to direct an attack against the problem. The way to solve a problem is to address the cause of the problem. If you are sleeping too late in the morning the best solution is not to force yourself awake earlier. The best solution is to go to bed earlier. Very often what appears to be a problem is merely a symptom. When you attempt to get rid of the symptom without tending to the cause, that results in a bigger disruption. Anything that’s troubling you has a distinct cause. Though it is natural to focus on the trouble, you’ll be much more successful when you focus on the cause. The deeper you can get into eliminating the cause, the better. Yes, that’s difficult work, and it provides correspondingly valuable rewards. When you hear yourself complaining about a problem, take it as a cue to look for the cause. Give yourself the power to correct the situation once and for all. — Ralph Marston

Respect your intentions In order to get along well in society, you know you must respect the intentions of others. It’s just as important, if not more so, to respect your own intentions. You begin each day, each week, each year with good intentions. Yet those intentions can quickly be whittled down to nothing by surprises, distractions, and negligence. This time last year what did you intend to do? Have you done it all? Assign your own intentions at least as much value as you would the intentions of someone you highly respect. Plant those intentions firmly in your awareness and find a way to keep them there. Give continuing action to your intentions. Keep doing whatever you can so that you keep those intentions alive and prominent. You absolutely can achieve what you intend. Give your intentions all the respect they deserve and earn the fulfillment you so richly deserve. — Ralph Marston

Shining alternative Every day you run into carelessness and incompetence. Rather than bemoan that sad state of affairs, provide life with a shining alternative. Why should you care when other people don’t care? Because if no one cares then everyone loses. One big reason for all the carelessness and incompetence is a lack of inspiration. You can generate that inspiration by serving as a positive example. Life is markedly more enjoyable and fulfilling when you’re committed to excellence. Claim that satisfaction for yourself while also showing others how good it can be. Someone has to be the person who does what is right, what is good, and caring and meaningfully excellent. Be that person, cheerfully, generously, without judgment. Show the world how good life can be when you’re purposeful, diligent, and competent. And you’ll spread that goodness to all those around you. — Ralph Marston

Life is real Today is your opportunity to live well. Decide what you are going to do with it, and then do it. Today is your opportunity to make a difference, in your own life, in the lives of others. Seize that opportunity and follow all the way through on it. Today is more than just time to be passed, situations to be endured. Today is when life is real, when possibilities are present, when fulfillment gets done. What a waste it would be to let all that slip by without something distinctive to show for it. Embrace your potential and then do something with it. Today will have challenges, to be sure. So be sure to make those challenges count for something good and worthwhile. Feel the purpose that lives within you. Today that purpose has all sorts of great things to do. — Ralph Marston

Outside your assumptions Your assumptions exert a powerful and continuous influence over your thoughts, actions, priorities. Don’t let those assumptions be hijacked by your own neglect or by anyone else’s designs. It’s easy to assume what you’ve always assumed and to never even realize you’re doing it. Then you wonder why you feel perpetually stuck. It’s just as easy to assume what the loudest, most persistent voices tell you to assume. Then you wonder why you always feel disappointed. It’s really quite a simple and refreshing thing to walk away from your most stultifying assumptions. All you have to do is entertain the possibility that there is a better possibility, that you could be mistaken. Maybe what you assume to be too difficult, or uncomfortable, awkward or inconvenient could actually be highly liberating, inspiring, energizing. Perhaps that thing you never wanted to do can become the thing you always rush to do. Notice your many assumptions, challenge them, explore the large and edifying space outside of them. And add great richness to every part of your life. — Ralph Marston

This is life Give time and space to your curiosity, your taste for wonder. Let all of life amaze you and enchant you. Allow this moment to be the way this moment is going to be. Accept its unique value and experience. Stand in awe of all that is. Find great hope in all that is now possible. Treasure the beauty of existence as it unfolds before your eyes. This is life, your life, right now, its depth, breadth, and substance incomparable. Forge new, uplifting connections, with love. Give your most authentic gifts, with joy. Another day, another moment of life comes into being. Let it be the best one yet. — Ralph Marston

Steer clear of conflict It’s almost impossible for people to get angry with you if you refuse to get angry back at them. No one is going to bother insulting you if their insults fail to produce any kind of response. Kindness and respect exist and flourish not merely because they have moral value. It’s because they have strategic value and the powerful potential to persuade. If you seek to change someone’s mind, you’re not going to do it by hurling insults. The most viable pathway involves understanding, respect, and kindness. Do you want to make it difficult for someone to argue against you? Then find a way to agree with what they’re saying. That doesn’t mean you have to contradict your own point of view. Dig deep enough to reach a common point of view, and go from there. Before you work on proving your point, put in the time, thought, and effort to improve rapport and connection. Steer clear of needless conflict and make way for real cooperation and progress. — Ralph Marston

Life’s magnificent bargain Don’t shy away from life’s challenges. Those challenges are precisely where you will find new richness. The more difficult something is to accomplish or acquire, the greater value it has. The more trouble you must endure and the more resources you must expend, the more you will treasure the results. Difficult times are the times when you grow strong. Challenging efforts are the ones that force you to become more capable. By its very nature, adventure is not easy. And you certainly deserve a life of adventure. So accept the challenges and agree to the terms of life’s magnificent bargain. Go to the trouble, put up with the inconveniences, deal with the difficulties, and claim your greatest rewards. Even life’s worst moments provide you the opportunity to give your best. Take that opportunity every time. — Ralph Marston

Make a little progress Even a small amount of progress feels good. Even a small amount of progress is better than no progress. What good thing can you do that will make life just a little bit better? Give it priority, give it attention, give it action, get it done. Do you wish you had more confidence in yourself, or in the future? Make a little progress and you’ll discover a lot more of that confidence you seek. Remind yourself of your abilities in a way you won’t soon forget, in a way you cannot deny. Deposit a little bit of new value into life where it did not exist before. That is the real life magic of which you’re capable. And when you perform a little of that magic, you’ll be inspired and encouraged by yourself and others to do more. A little progress is yours to be had within the hour, at any hour. It’s a powerful way to successfully deal with whatever confronts you right now. — Ralph Marston

Continue your choices A single positive choice is one step in the right direction. For that one step to have any lasting consequence, you must continue to add to it. Whatever success you seek will not magically spring from just one choice. Success is built upon many, many choices that all support and enable each other. Choose a healthy, nutritious breakfast, and follow that choice with a nutritious lunch and dinner. Then continue your healthy choices the next day, and the next, and make those choices a continuing part of your life. Choose to show up on time and do more than is asked of you, then make that choice again, week after week, month after month. Give power to each positive choice by carrying it with you as you move steadily into the future. As you follow through with each choice, feel its immediate benefits and envision its long-term value. Right then and there, inspire yourself, commit yourself to making that choice again. Continue to link your positive choices, another upon another. What you’ve chosen before, you can choose again, giving your choices the power to bear magnificent fruit. — Ralph Marston
