Some people choose to be part of a religion, but all of us are part of spirituality. Our life and recovery is based on spirituality. Recovery is spiritual not a religious program. I found this to be very confusing. As a newcomer I wanted recovery, but was sickened by the idea that I was joining a religion. This is the reason the recovery program was made and will always stay well outside of any religion, because so many newcomers feel this way. I was still bothered by the fact that recovery meetings were at churches and the prayers were from religions. I asked my sponsor how can you say this isn't religious, he said that these things were just a matter of convenience, and that if I was to stick around long enough I would find meetings that weren't at churches and prayers that weren't from religions. Then he said the our use of spirituality in recovery isn't a problem for religions, but that it was because of our own problems with religions there has to be a separation.
