It's said we get exactly what we expect. This was frightening for most of us to hear when we began our recovery not because we believed this was true but because we had lived it and we didn't know why this was. All we knew is that over time we had to keep lowering our expectations of what we could expect from everyone and everything, including ourselves. This got to the point where we could only expect the worst in everybody and everything, and that is exactly what we got. None of us could ever figure this out why this seemed to be happening to us or how we ended up like this. This is what happens to us all as the result of the problem we all share. This is what it does to us. Recovery can help us with this by first teaching us it's okay that we accept everything and everybody just as it is. When we start to do this we will begin to free ourselves from any of our expectations that we might have, and things will immediately start to get better because we no longer have any expectations, and for us this is a good thing, that we don't have any.
