I met people in recovery who are practical about the whole god thing. It was the first time I had someone like this. I had met those who were fanatical about god and somehow I would sense this lack of sincerity that led me to find contempt about anything they said. Not so with those I heard speak at recovery meetings about the god of their understanding. It was from this very practical point of view that I was attracted to what they were saying. They spoke about their own defiance to their dependency on a power greater than themselves that to me seemed very sincere, and honest, almost enough so that I might even be willing to try to do some of the things they said had worked for them to give them a better way to live.
