Default Reboot and Recover

A New Day eDevotional

Reboot and Recover

Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” The computer from which I work at home is several years old. To say it has its challenges at times is an understatement. Recently while preparing for a sermon my computer suddenly shut down. After working several hours, I thought the Word document was certainly gone, and I would have to start all over. But once I rebooted, the Microsoft Office program implemented a recovery program and presented me with my Word document that had been “auto saved.” To my relief, I was able to pick up where I had left off with my studies, and complete the project. I am sure that the Microsoft engineers who designed the program knew in advance that computer failure would be inevitable. Computers fail.

At the same token, people fail. Sometimes our failures are borne of issues beyond our control, and sometimes they are a result of poor choices we have made. But failure need not be final. Just as Bill Gates and his colleagues at Microsoft built in an auto-save and recovery component in their software, even so the Lord has built into His kingdom a recovery feature as well. It is called grace. There are times in our lives where we feel that things are going well. We are following the program. In essence, we are “on a roll.” Then life happens. Our systems shut down. Sometimes we even crash. Is all lost? Never. Grace is the abundance of God’s favor whereby, not only can we begin again, but we can recover what initially seemed to be lost. Consider it God’s version of auto-save. In grace, we find we can re-boot, and pick up where we ended. No matter where you are in life, no matter what failures you have encountered, rely upon God’s gift of grace. He will enable you to recover all that seems to be lost, and allow you to continue your journey, and finish the work He is presently achieving in you, for this and for each new day.
