God’s Abundant Resources
By Helen Grace Lescheid “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20) Despite a physical condition that confined him to a wheelchair, Fred was grateful to God for his many blessings. With hard work and determination, he’d managed to graduate from university with two degrees which landed him a good - paying job. He was married to a wonderful woman, had two beautiful daughters, and lived in a comfortable home. At first when Fred couldn’t breathe, he figured he had a cold. But months later, a doctor confirmed his worst fears: muscular dystrophies had weakened his lungs and he’d have to go on a ventilator. Being hooked up to a noisy machine like a running vacuum cleaner wasn’t Fred’s idea of living a full life. He sank into a depression. When people told him they were praying for him, Fred thanked them. But he found little comfort in their words. God has done all He’s going to do, he thought. It’s time for Him to move on to the next guy. After all that God had done for him, it seemed selfish to be asking for more. Do you sometimes feel like that? You’re in need of God’s blessing - again - and you’re afraid to ask. Why? Because it seems selfish. We’ve been conditioned to think that there’s only so much blessing to go around. A mother divides a pie carefully so that everyone gets a piece. We put money aside for a rainy day. We have to pace ourselves lest we peter out. Why? Because our resources do run out, But is God limited like we are? One day, as Fred was sitting in his garden, bathed in sunshine, he looked at the flowers growing in profusion and heard the birds singing in the trees. “They enjoy God’s blessings day after day,” he thought. “No worry about whether they deserve them or not.” Then it dawned on him: God’s supplies are limitless. What’s more, he delights to pour them out on his creation and on his children. Fred began to believe that God wanted to bless him again. He went back to work and, despite a ventilator, learned to live a full and rich life. Do you sometimes feel like you’ve exhausted God’s blessings? Imagine yourself going to an ocean and filling a bottle with water. Has the ocean diminished? Neither can you exhaust God’s resources. So, go ahead and ask God to bless you again. Question: Do you sometimes feel like you’ve exhausted God’s blessings? Why?
