The Measuring Stick
When we're new to recovery we'll see there's a lot of attention being paid on how much time any of us have been here and while this may be important to some of us in other ways it has its hazards as well. The biggest one is us thinking that the more time we have here in recovery the better off we'll be, and things will be made easier for us because of all the time we have. This simply is not true and longer we're all here the more we'll see this. The measuring stick that's held up to all of us in recovery is how much all of us have changed for the better since we all got here, and this can be seen by any one and we'll all see this as we all go along in recovery. Time has very little to do with this. And the change that we're all looking for is found by all of us being willing to do the actions that can bring this about for any one who does them. And it's very easy to see which one of us has taken these actions and who has not, or when someone isn't even willing to take them for themselves. And it's okay for all of us when someone doesn't want to take these actions because this is how all of us can learn to want to change ourselves, by seeing those of us who are here that haven't changed a bit since they got here, and have been here for some time now.
