The Call
The Call
The twelve apostles were the first to receive and to respond to the direct call of Jesus. As they gathered into the first community of Jesus' disciples, their bond of unity was their hunger for God and their growing belief in Jesus. And yet, as with all human beings, they were plagued with faults. Peter, though bold at times, could also be fearful and cowardly. The sons of Zebedee were prone to violence. Judas was a traitor. And all of the apostles were slow to catch the meaning of Jesus' death and resurrection. Yet, Jesus worked through these men to establish a community of faith to which we too have been invited. Each one of us has been called to faith in Jesus, and each of us has received the invitation to spread his message. In our own way, we do what the apostles did, but, like them, we bring our defects with us. Instead of worrying about our defects, we should work with complete confidence in God. In the midst of our defects, God accomplishes his purposes simply because he is God. So long as our trust is in him rather than in ourselves, we will be able to do what he asks of us. His power is greater than our weakness, and his love is strong enough to accomplish within us whatever it wills. Lord, I hear your call to me. Increase my confidence in you. So long as I trust you to help me, I need not waste time worrying about my defects. I place them in your hands and turn my energies to respond to your call as well as I can. Focus Your Day
