Default Exercise Self-Control

EXERCISE SELF-CONTROL

Practicing self-control is hard in some things and easier in others. Self-control is something we don't think about when we lash out at someone or do something we later regret. And regret or guilt seems to follow lack of self-control. To be ready when temptation comes, we are to prepare our minds now. We can prepare by reading God's word, praying and planning our move to be ready for the next opportunity to exercise self-control.

1 Peter 1:13 "So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world." (NLT)

Dear Lord, self-control is hard. When we attempt to control ourselves, we are usually trying to stop ourselves from doing something we shouldn't do. If we would practice self-control more, it will become easier. However, if we don't practice self-control, we will be like a loose cannon going off in every direction. We will lose trust with others. We will hurt people. We will live in disobedience to You. Help us be a better influence to others by practicing self-control in all areas of our lives. In Jesus' name. Amen.

God tells us to prepare our minds now for action and to exercise self-control. What are we doing to prepare?

If we don't practice self-control, we will be like a loose cannon going off in every direction.

Understanding that no one is perfect and people will let us down will help us to remember to stay focused on God for self-control.

We aren't really influencing anyone in a positive way when we don't practice self-control.

A city with broken down walls is not very safe. Neither is being around someone without self-control.

Proverbs 25:28 "A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls." (NLT)

Focus: When we do what God wants us to do, we are practicing self-control.
